Florence Knoll 3-Seat Bench
Florence Knoll 3-Seat Bench
Modern day obsession with Mid-Century design wouldn't exist if not for the momentous efforts of Florence Knoll. The most significant chapter in Knoll’s life was spent devoted to her namesake company. Her work at Knoll in cultivating the world’s talent in the fields of design & architecture resulted in one of the most timeless collections of furniture design still revered today. Florence Knoll was also one of the first designers of commercial space, her “Planning Unit” team took on projects for clients such as IBM, Connecticut General Life, CBS, and Look Magazine.
It was during these years in interior design when Knoll required furniture which in some cases simply did not exist, her response to such problem was simple: design it. With that, she created what may be one of the most iconic furniture collections of our time. Her Sofas, Lounge Chairs, Tables, and Benches such as this 3-seat iteration, are beloved symbols of mid-century design still used in homes & offices alike.
Florence Knoll’s collection of benches are perhaps the most recognizable of her designs. The signature leveler-equipped chromed steel frame on this 3-seat bench remains in very good condition with minor wear consistent with age and history. Knoll was inspired by her mentor Ludwig Mies van der Rohe when it came to her benches’ upholstered tops. She employed Mies’ famed tufted grid with welted seam system which is virtually indestructible, shown here in its original leather in the color Espresso. This bench is incised with KnollStudio accompanied by Florence Knoll’s signature on its chromed steel frame. Overall this is an excellent example of an iconic Knoll design
