Nicos Zographos made his name during his time at the renown architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He joined the interior design department in 1957 and was afforded much creative freedom which he used to develop original furniture designs. Large scale projects at SOM such as the Union Carbide Corporation Building and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery required specific furniture design solutions which Zographos delivered; his Ribbon Chair (1959) was an at-the-time contemporary take on the classic Barcelona Chair by the revered Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Zographos also developed a family of TA35 Tables (1960) which includes this table shown in our collection. The designer quickly spun off to form his own studio, Zographos Designs, and he would continue his work designing for both commercial and residential spaces.
This particular TA35 cocktail table was most definitely a special order item as it is larger than most tables within the family. At 48” diameter, this table is exquisitely generous welcoming a household’s worth of users to gather round and utilize its seemingly endless span of glass surface. Zographos’ signature design details in his TA35 suite were the use of a solid stainless steel frame, expertly ground welds, and distinct rounded joints from which each diminutive leg gracefully extends; thoughtfully reminiscent of classic architectural forms. While there are absolutely no chips in the gorgeous 5/8” thick glass or any gouges in the stainless steel; minor wear does exists which is consistent with age and history.
