Jens Risom "Model 2516" Sofa

Jens Risom "Model 2516" Sofa

With great reason, the name Jens Risom is synonymous with the Mid-Century Modern design movement. Hailing from Denmark, Risom’s talent quickly resonated with the great Hans Knoll after emigrating to the United States and together they launched the Hans Knoll Furniture Company in 1942. It is after this momentous start of Risom’s career that he would start his own line of furniture; Jens Risom Design Inc.

While many of Risom’s designs from his namesake company are no longer in production, some designs were produced in larger quantities than others and thus can be readily found to this day. There are other examples of his work however, such as this “Model 2516” sofa, which are less often seen and quite special when they become available. The Object Refinery team was thrilled to have the opportunity to restore a piece of Risom design which was by coincidence produced in our home state of Connecticut. Risom’s expert level of attention to detail revealed itself when our team began to remove the sofa’s original fabric. We found a solid oak frame (stamped December 9, 1965) which could have easily been stained, finished and left exposed - the quality and craftsmanship of these hidden details is far beyond what any other furniture manufacturer was producing at the time and even to this day.

Our team restored this Model 2516 sofa with a handsome Bouclé in the color Fog. Extensive research was conducted into the history and factory specifications of this piece and all restoration was executed in line with our findings, our team was also able to preserve the original upholstery labels which we’ve reattached. Minor improvements were made such as the use of one continuous piece of fabric for the sofa’s back which eliminates the need for seams. Per the Risom catalogue we’ve re-filled the seat cushions with durable foam inserts and the back cushions with down wrapped foam; this combination is optimal for comfort and no-fuss use. The tailored look of this piece lends itself to adapt with ease in both formal and informal environments. The fully restored upholstered top sits with a graceful pitch on the original solid walnut base which gives the finished sofa a weightless look, just as Jens Risom would have intended.
